Background

NRC has provided first-line humanitarian response since 2021 with multisector activities in shelter, education, livelihoods and food security, and information, counselling and legal assistance. Our focus is on supporting people in hard-to-reach areas, working in partnership with authorities and local actors. We are piloting cash-based interventions with displaced populations living in host communities. NRC offers a comprehensive response for returnees and IDPs of high need, addressing their food security, livelihood, shelter, education, ICLA, and water, hygiene and sanitation needs and also responding to emergencies through NRC’s six core competencies; Shelter, Education, Livelihoods and Food Security, WASH and Information, Counselling and Legal Assistance (ICLA) and Protection from Violence.

NRC Somalia is part of NRC’s East & South Africa regional operation which comprises of large-scale multi-country humanitarian and early recovery interventions spread across Ten countries (Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan and Mozambique).  NRC’s overall strategy in the region is to enhance protection and promote the rights of displaced people in humanitarian need by improving living conditions and seeking durable solutions. The regional office is based in Nairobi and works with country programmes to ensure standardization of programmatic and operational approaches, promote multi-country programming and ensure quality and coordination.

Role and responsibilities

The Livelihoods and Food Security Project Assistant will be responsible for day-to-day implementation of LFS activities in Galmudug State.

Generic responsibilities:

  • Assist with the implementation of the support function portfolio according to plan of action
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by management
  • Ensure proper filing of documents
  • Promote and share ideas for improvement of the support function

  • Use initiative in day-to-day problem solving in line with agreed procedures, priorities, and standards for the area of work.

  • Promote and share ideas for improvement in Livelihoods and Food Security
  • Liaise with your supervisors to support in preparation of contract documents, verification certificates for incentive workers, partners, and other service providers timely to facilitate proper and prompt payment to the partners.
  • Work with incentive workers to ensure that correct data capture procedures are adhered to during PDM and other monitoring activities.
  • Administer working advances, field-based resource person’s payments and participants’ activity payments in compliance with NRC policy.
  • Maintain clear and up to date records of livelihood programme beneficiaries and activities (beneficiary numbers, locations, contact details, activity progress) – including by regularly visiting beneficiaries’ homes or businesses.
  • Help collect baseline and monitoring data by conducting interviews with beneficiaries and key informants.
  • Organize nutrition, food security and WASH awareness sessions for beneficiaries and host communities.
  • Liaise and work with fellow project assistants including field assistants to implement and document LFS activities in South and Central Somalia with special focus at the on the projects assigned.
  • Support and work with incentive workers, implementing partners, suppliers & beneficiaries to; build capacity, ensure that correct documentation procedures are adhered to during field activities including M&E activities.
  • In consultation with the project officer and project coordinator, represent NRC in community meetings, coordination meetings and other information sharing fora that is available.
  • Timely reporting and support in preparation of project reports/updates for the ongoing project activities
  • Perform any other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.

Professional competencies

Generic professional competencies: 

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in agriculture, social science, and or another related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience and knowledge of  GAP practices in food security and livelihoods programmes in Somalia.
  • Experience in a Humanitarian emergency response is an added advantage.
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Excellent communication (spoken and written) skills.
  • Very good organizational and administrative skills

Context/ Specific skills, knowledge and experience: 

  • Knowledge of the context in Somalia
