Position Title: Senior Graphic Design Assistant

Vacancy Number: VN/IOMSO/021/2023

Duty Station: IOM Somalia in Mogadishu, Somalia

Classification: General Service Category, Grade G-6

Type of Appointment: One Year Fixed Term, with possibility of extension

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Since 2006, IOM Somalia has been implementing a range of humanitarian and development projects in all regions of Somalia. With more than 7 million people requiring humanitarian assistance in 2023, evolving mixed migration flows in and out of Somalia, increasing access and donor interest in Somalia, programmatic scope for IOM is growing rapidly. In this context, IOM Somalia is implementing a multitude of projects and is expanding its sectoral portfolio. IOM Somalia is therefore seeking an incumbent to support graphic design efforts.

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission and the direct supervision of the Media and Communications Officer, and in coordination with Senior Communications Assistants, the Senior Graphic Design Assistant will support the public and internal communications of IOM Somalia through assisting in the development and designing of key information and visibility products.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Design and produce a wide range of visually compelling print and digital materials, including reports, brochures, infographics, banners, presentations, and web graphics.
  2. Collaborate with programme teams to understand their communication needs and translate them into visual solutions.
  3. Design and edit artworks, photos, charts and other graphic elements.
  4. Recommend the best and most relevant visual design style and materials suitable for IOM Somalia’s various stakeholders and audiences.
  5. Ensure all design work aligns with IOM’s brand guidelines and principles.
  6. Support development, improvement and/or editing of artwork, photographs, charts and other graphic elements for use in IOM Somalia’s digital and print products.
  7. Update IOM Somalia’s Visibility and Communication folders so all created products are accessible to relevant colleagues.
  8. Manage relationships with external design agencies and freelancers when necessary.
  9. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

 

 

Skills and Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or other related disciplines; with minimum four of years of related professional experience; or

High School Degree in above field with minimum six years of related professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and training

Experience

  • Minimum four years of professional experience in graphic design;
  • Usage of Adobe Creative Suite programmes, particularly In Design, Photoshop, and Illustrator mandatory.
  • Experience in photography and videography, both shooting and editing an advantage.
  • Experience working with international agencies like the UN is an advantage.

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds.
  • Excellent graphic design skills.
  • Creative thinker and with a good eye for design.
  • High level of professionalism and ability to work under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines in a complex and fast changing environment.
  • Demonstrated gender awareness and gender sensitivity.

Languages

Fluency in English and Somali (oral and written) required. Working knowledge of other Somali dialect, Arabic, Amharic or Oromo.

Only candidates residing in either the country of the duty station or from a location in a neighboring country that is within commuting distance of the duty station will be considered. In all cases, a prerequisite for taking up the position is legal residency in the country of the duty station, or in the neighboring country located within commuting distance, and work permit, as applicable.
